"We have used all types of leather chaps, starting with equitation chaps or show chaps built for western rider these chaps were all shotgun chaps. These western chaps are worn by the equestrian rider in western pleasure classes. My daughters were young then and equitation kids chaps were required in western pleasure shows and worn wherever they showed their horses.
"Later, my daughter turned from showing horses to participating in junior rodeo events and we began to see junior rodeo chaps, while some of the competitors wear metallic rodeo chaps others would wear suede chaps or top grain chaps. Most of the chaps worn by these young cowboys and cowgirls are the same, cut from the same patterns, These cowgirl chaps may be pink with white trim but they all were cut to look like the pro rodeo chaps the profession cowboys would wear.
"As A child I used to watch my father log with horses, he used horses for working in the woods and while working cattle in the sand hills of Nebraska. My father was one of the children of the depression and he worked hard, the ranch chaps he used had to take the daily grind of ranch work. You could see every type of chap used batwing chaps, cutter chaps, chinks and buckaroo chaps. I have a good sense of the type of top grain leather chaps needed for ranch work.
"I began to ride cutting and reining horses once my daughter became old enough to pull her horses to rodeos by herself. I began to see traditional chaps designed in earth tones used by the cutters, more of a batwing chap style with lighter colors, smoother leather chaps with fringe. When team penning began I wore a pair of leather chink chaps and started wearing leather chaps team penning, most of the team penners wore chinks, or other kinds of traditional leather chaps in earth tones designed after the working cowboys of traditional styles used in cattle country.
